My Brother

My younger brother, who lived here in Boston also, is leaving today for good. He's going to Egypt. He left many opportunities behind him. He left an opportunity to transfer to Harvard or Georgetown. He left the cleanliness and the peace of mind. He decided to transfer to Cairo University instead were he will finish dual degrees in Law and Political Science.

He figured if he truly wanted to help his people he would have to do so from there. To my Arab readership who will genuinely appreciate the magnitude of his convictions; this is amongst the bravest acts of selflessness I have ever seen, and I am humbled. Let him be a lesson to us. Let's stop complaining and pointing fingers. Let's rise to the occasion and act. Let us follow our convictions with courage, face our problems, and not rest till their amended. Let us deserve our Arab pride.

1 - very commendable on his part. Tell him to be tough and expect anything, specially if he has been away for a long time. I did the same thing about month ago after a few years in Sydney(thats the whole point of my blog), and oh boy its not as easy as it seems. you leave your 1st world comfort zone, nice campus/clean streets/ cool and varying social scene( instead of seeing the same people between sangria/bodega/tabasco/auc/MSA-been to latex and club 35-posers neek khasi), then move back to the ol hood, its rough, believe me. First few weeks are very cool cuz your seeing family and friends, someone is back to cooking and cleaning for you and so on, after a few weeks it hits you" shit, i am back". Maybe i am bieng a bit negative, the high point is that your home, you are here with your people, facing which ever challenges are lying ahead. convince him to start his own blog, as there are still many egyptians out there trying to come back, and i have been giving them through my blog balanced accounts of bieng back, i am sure we can use another "returnee" in the blogosphere.Tell him for me good luck, and dont expect things to go very well, but he has to work hard to make them go well. (Comment this)

2 - You know, i am kind of glad that Orientalism posted this before i did, because i am always accused of being mr. negative over at my blog. So..yeah.. anyway..

Does your brother have a way back to the states? Like an american passport or a greencard? Cause, you know, he will need it after he gets fed up. What he is doing is very commendable and selfless indeed, but it's also incredibly idealistic and maybe even slightly unrealistic. He might realize after a while that the problem with helping his people is that most of them don't want to be helped, and that they might even fight him because he is trying to help. And i am speaking from my own experience here.

There is an anti-achievement sentiment here that is prevelant in the attitude of most egyptians that i've met. They don't like the conditions that they are in, but they are unwilling to do anything about it besides bitch and moan. Try to get them to work the right way and they will fight you every step of the way because a) they don't want to work and b) if you were able to do it better then them, then they would look like idiots , or lazy, and they can't have that.

I was once offerd this post at the ministery of investment by this woman who spent her whole life working and living abroad and wanted to give something back to the country. I remember getting interviewed, and her telling me that if i worked there that i will need to find my inner patriot, because otherwise i wouldn't last a week. I was fine with it, and we agreed on a salary and everything and all she had to do was to get the approval of the human resources person. The HR person decided , since my proposed salary was equal to that of some people who have spent 10 years in the ministery, but have none of my qualifications or experience, that it should be cut in half. He told her that "if i really loved the country", i would be ok with a 50% downgrade of what i am already making. That day i realised that loving my country meant getting jibbed, and i decided to stay in my old job. The woman resigned 3 months later because they wouldn't allow her to get the people she wanted or do the necessary things to run things the right way. I hear she is back living in Britian now, swearing to never set foot in Egypt again.

I hope your brother will fare much better, altough i can't see how getting his law degree from cairo University instead of Harvard is being patriotic. What if he decides later on in life that it's a dumb move and realizes that it is too late to change it? He couldn't get the law degree from the ivy league university then come down and help his people? How is screwing himself over patriotic exactly? can you explain that to me?

I like your website btw.

3 - Thanks for comment Orientalism, its true there are a lot of similarities between you, my brother, and plenty of other expats coming home. About starting a new blog he is actually helping me work on our main site and agenda www.onearabworld.org. I am going to add him as another author on this one though. Of course our focus is to promote a new Pan-Arabism and eventually a Party but for now we are hoping to share our experiences much as you do.

Sandmonkey. I’ve been waiting for you to comment. I have been very interested with your perspectives ever since I started blogging. I don’t agree with a lot of them but I do respect the work.

Believe me we know what we are getting ourselves into. We know it’s considered idealistic, naïve, or unrealistic. We know its going to be a tough life if we really are going to devote it all to what we believe in. I’ve gotten frustrated with Egypt and moved away so many times during school I’ve lost count. (course it was for a variety of different reasons ;) But you said it yourself.

“They [Egyptians] don't like the conditions that they are in, but they are unwilling to do anything about it besides bitch and moan.”

See you are forgetting to include us in this equation (I’m assuming yourself as well). We are sick of bitching and moaning and now we are going to do something about it.

Patriotism? The fact that we write Arabic at a high school level and know more about American Government than Egyptian should be enough to prompt a man claiming to be patriotic to fear hypocrisy. Cairo U? What better place in the world is there to learn about the problems that need solving in our “fragile Arab socio-demographic”? I’ve been to Ivy schools. In terms of education they amount to nothing more than what you can figure out with an internet connection. Degree? Yes, there is no arguing there but the most important aspect of university is exposure. Were he interested in perusing a financially rewarding career in law, then yes, a smart looking diploma from a famous school were he could meet the future leaders of the field would be ideal. But for a future in the Arab political arena you would be hard pressed to argue that the path he has chosen would not give him the most momentum; the people he would meet, the raw understanding of the problems, the aspect of growing from within instead of pointing from abroad.

I would be very interested in meeting you someday Sam. What you’re doing is very commendable. Maybe next time I’m in Cairo we can have lunch. (Comment this)

4 - Sorry Karim, absolutely no offence intended to your brother, but he's kinda stupid. He'll regret giving up those opportunities he had. Seriously, he should've taken them, come back after he's finished his studies there ya akhy.

In any case, good luck to him. (Comment this)

7 - This is a great blog! I'm thrilled to have stumbled upon it. I'm a strong believer in pan-Arabism myself. And I have a big issue with Egyptians who think they're too good for their own country. Fine I respect those who insist that living abroad in belad bara is an achievement in itself but there are lots of highly intelligent, educated, smart, ambitious and fantastic Egyptians IN EGYPT btw. The belad bara mentality is getting us no where. And we can't just wait for the current regime to change itself into what WE WANT while we sit back and moan or fly to belad bara because that's a solution. I think we're mature enough to act grown up about this and actually do something about it. Stop being spoilt ;)
Karim thanks for this blog. (Comment this)

8 - Thank you Azza. I am actually starting a Pan Arabist mailing list. Just an emailed newsletter that members can contribute articles too, that I hope will be able to start promoting Pan Arabism v2.0 for what it should be; a federation of economically entwined Arab Nations.
In the mean time anyone that would like to get on this list email me at onearabworld@hotmail.com with ADD TO LIST in the subject box. (Comment this)

9 - Azza, let those who want to be spoilt be spoilt, and those who want to come back and save the country do it. No one said there are no great Egyptians inside and outside of Egypt. No one said that living abroad is an achievement in itself, but those who decide to stay outside, are no less Egyptians than those who come back. (Comment this)
