However, Mr. Sowell's interchangeable use of loaded words like 'Pan-Arabism' and Arab nationalism are not synonymous; it is an established fact that Arab nationalism and Pan-Arabism are two distinct nuances on the same spectrum, I agree, but whose conceptual definitions do not converge. Pan-Arabism was and remains an ideal that was in reality actualized for a certain period of time; its ideals and principles should not be confused with "Arab nationalism".
Arab nationalism refers to a nationalist ideology that encompasses the Arab world. It is a claim to common heritage whereby all Arabs are united by a shared history, culture, and language. Pan-Arabism is more political in nature, and has a similiar construct, but specifically calls for the creation of a united single Arab state. In essence, my small but crucial point is that not all Arab nationalists are also Pan-Arabists. Ergo, it is imperative for individuals to recognize that these terms -- Arab nationalism, pan-arabism and arabism share an affinity, but in fact do not necessarily mean the same thing.

Another important message I'd like to share with you is this constant buzzing I hear on the media, other Arabs, and equally non-Arabs-- that countries like Egypt have no chance of ever really becoming a functioning democracy. TO ward off any assumption that I am advocating that Egypt is any way 100% democratic is just that--an assumption. I am arguing that the form and content of 'democratic participation' and democratic dynamics in the Middle East are for obvious reasons different and multifarious. However, this does not translate into the eventual death of democracy in Egypt. The Egyptian political, economic and socioeconomic landscape is changing in more ways than one: there is an evident increase in mass mobilization, more and more protests and demonstrations. One will say, so what, the elites still hold the power to take decisions freely, but therein lies the difference: Scholars have debated that elites that share dictatorial facets, that hold the reins of political power in their country, have the choice of either tolerating mass mobilized demonstrations and groups, or either quashing them. Before in Egypt, any sort of demonstrations that took place were legally banned and pushed underground if they did not overtly support the "majority" or status-quo. Today, a different dynamic is taking place, a phenomena that ought to be applauded in academic circles around the globe, (that actually do take in interest in Egyptian politics): The average Egyptian is taking a stand; (s)he is vocally and overtly, not tacitly defending his/her political views and is not to some extent being quashed. Perhaps this can be seen as just a trend, or perhaps let's be optimistic, it can eventually evolve into a full-fledged form of democratic participation that will lead to more democratic reforms in Egypt.
