Friends of Syria
I recently came across a very interesting site pushing for a refreshingly honest and fair handling of Syria called Friends of Syria. I urge all my readers to visit the site, investigate its mission, and make a calculated decision whether or not to voice their support by adding their names.
With the aftermath of Iraq’s invasion still vibrantly chaotic, there is perpetual inner conflict amongst most Arabs. The vast majority recognized Saddam’s régimes vile nature and the need for drastic change in prior to the invasion. An equal majority, however, attribute the invasion to a thinly veiled power play by the Americans and British with cynically opportunistic motivations. I feel that we, as Arabs, need to start cleaning up our own messes before they manage to get even further out of hand, if for nothing more than to avoid any foreign powers the excuse of invasion.

I consider myself a proud friend of the Syrian People. (Comment this)
Some people will never forgive George Bush that he stopped Saddam from killing more Kurds and Shi'ites.
I don't know what a "failer" is, but I believe "murderer" is not the word for somebody who does not, actually, murder people.
"most ask of Syrians and Arabs in general to distinguish between Jews and Israelis"
I believe distinguishing between Jews and Israelis is merely a convenient way to condemn Israel for things which one would never condemn any other country for without directly admitting that the opinion has to do with Jews.
The fact that Israel is Jewish is the number one difference between Israel and other countries.
And treatment of Israel by others is number two.
"I consider myself a proud friend of the Syrian People."
What will the Syrian people do against their regime? What will they do when they have a choice? Do you think the Syrian people would act totally differently if given the chance? (Comment this)
How happy are Syrians under their dictator? What exactly is the value of a "friendship" when it is the friendship with the dictator, and not the people?
And what will Iran's place in history be when their government continues to insult the proud history of the country? (Comment this)
Syrians won't do anything against their regime because the moment they dare to do so, they will be detained and sent to the torture prison in Tartus. Hence they will stay at the mercy of the arbitrariness of the oppressive system. In order to cool down the frustration with this system the government foments the agitation (mostly by islamist demagogues) against Israel and the West to distract from domestic problems. All frustration of the masses is focussed on the big Sheitan from the West and the people neglect the governmental Sheitan who terrorizes their own country. One could observate that recently with the uprisings against the cartoons about the prophet Muhammad (salalla ulei usallam).
Due to these cartoons a mob of angry Syrians shattered Damascus rioting and looting embassies and burning Danish flags. These riots reveal the nature of the anti-Western sentiment in Syria. In Damascus spontaneous demonstrations are as rare as free elections in Syria - they do not occur without the approval and control of the government. Furthermore I wondered where the people suddenly had all those Danish flags from that were burned. Undoubtedly the government was behind all this unrest. The motive of such support is clear: distraction from domestic problems.
I don't want to evoke the impression that I am totally uncritical of Israel. Without doubt there are aspects of Israel which I do not agree with, for example the fact that Israel isn't a secular but a "Jewish State" in wich as far as I appreciate the situation non-Jews are discriminated by law. However, I think that among all problems which the Arab world faces Israel is really the tiniest one and the anti-Israeli (unfortunately often also anti-semitic) atmosphere is absolutely exaggerated, which is as already explained a product of governmental strategy.
Thus I hope you don't feel too offended by widespread anti-Israeli and anti-semitic feelings in Syria. The masses are blinded by the government.
Yours sincerely,
a Syrian living in Germany
Ps to Karim Elsahy: This is a great and very informative site, thx very much for your efforts with relation to pan-arabism, hopefully the pan-arab dream will come true once (Comment this)
Yes. I figured.
"Thus I hope you don't feel too offended by widespread anti-Israeli and anti-semitic feelings in Syria. The masses are blinded by the government."
Not at all. I know the situation they are in. I have visited East-Germany in the 1980s. I lived in West-Berlin at the time. I have seen what a dictatorship that controls the media does to people.
Thanks for your helpful comment.
Discrimination against minorities is a problem in Israel (although not of the same quality as in other countries of the region). I am particularly upset about Israeli treatment of Bedouins. There is a lot that has to be done. (I was also upset when the Egyptian government immediately accused Bedouins of complicity in the latest terror attacks in Egypt.)
Muhammad, I hope you enjoy Germany. I didn't. :-(
(Karim's version of pan-Arabism is to be applauded indeed.) (Comment this)
