OPPOSE THE DRACONIAN MEASURES AGAINST PALESTINIANS IN THE ROSS-LEHTINEN AND LANTOS RESOLUTION

*Representatives Ros-Lehtinen and Lantos have sponsored a resolution calling for devastating and extreme measures against the Palestinians to punish them for electing a Hamas led Palestinian Authority.  This resolution calls for a ban on all financial aid to the PA; a travel ban on all representatives of the PA; ending all financial support for UN programs linked to the PA (including food and education programs); closing PLO offices in Washington; and restricting the movements of the Palestinian representative to the UN.

*Take a moment and send our prewritten letter to your representatives asking them to both oppose and denounce this resolution. Tell your representatives that it is unreasonable and cruel to cut off aid to the Palestinian Authority merely because the U.S. does not like who the Palestinians voted for. Remind them that the U.S. demanded that Palestinians hold democratic elections and for the U.S. to now say that they will not accept Palestinian choices and that instead they will collectively punish Palestinians for their choices is ridiculous.

*Tell your representative that cutting off aid to Palestinians, in particular the assistance that Palestinians receive from the United Nations vis-à-vis education and food programs, will only serve to militarize Palestinian society and in no way advances the prospect of peace between Israelis and Palestinians.  Tell them that it is not in the best interests of Israeli security or American interests in the region to isolate and starve the Palestinian people.  Tell your representatives that you think supporting this resolution would be disastrous for U.S. foreign policy and that it would be unethical and immoral to take these draconian measures against Palestinians that would result in the starvation and ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian nation.  Below is the full text of the Ross-Lehtinen-Lantos draft.  Please take action today.

I think this is exactly the right thing to do.

The reason Palestine got financial support was because Arafat signed a peace treaty (which he broke). Hamas have said that the peace treaty is no longer valid, so there is no reason for the west to continue its obligations either. It was the Palestinians' choice. They voted for it. It's fair and square.

There are many peoples in the world who are in need of help. Most of them do not want to kill their neighbours and do not burn Danish flags.

Can you tell me one good reason for why the Palestinians should get the money, after rejecting the treaty that started the financial help, and not, say, black Africans south of the Sahara?

Perhaps the money should go to rebuilding southern Sudan.

Why not? (Comment this)

2 - I think they should send the money to denmark - to cover the totally unjust punishment of the danish people, by muslims worldwide, because of cartoons in a privately owned newspaper!

Or at least, the giant moneyfunds flowing from the EU - should be stopped, and directed towards denmark!

Please everybody - work for this, call your politicians in europe - to stop the arab hipocrasi, punishing a peacefull and innocent danish people! (Comment this)

3 - If I have followed the news correctly Hamas has refused to acknowledge Israel's the right to exist. They have committed acts of terrorism against innocent Jewish people. I have to give the Palestinian people credit they know this and yet voted for them. Okay, that was their vote. My vote for my tax dollars is to keep it away from states that vow to destroy Israel whether it be an Arab country or another. Actions have consequences, you cannot act like violent unaccountables and demand others to be accountable. (Comment this)

Given the behavior of the Palestinians during the cartoon crises, it sounds like a great idea. It might result in some political maturity. Also, the US doesn't owe financial aid to anybody. (Comment this)

5 - I scanned the proposed legislation. I'm not sure what you mean by draconian measures. They have put down a number of conditions that should be very simple to fulfill... and the Palestian Authority will continue getting aid.

The thing you need to realize is that the Palestian Authority is not automatically entitled to any aid from the U.S. Nor is any other country or group. Palestians are not U.S. taxpayers. Of course the U.S. has every right to say, we'll continue giving you financial aid that doesn't need to be repaid, but there are some conditions that you will have to meet which are mutually beneficial to both parties. (Comment this)
