Cleric: $1 Million to Kill Cartoonist

UPDATED BELOW

“PESHAWAR, Pakistan - A Pakistani cleric announced Friday a $1 million bounty for killing a cartoonist who drew Prophet Muhammad, as thousands joined street protests and Denmark temporarily closed its embassy and advised its citizens to leave the country.

Police confined the former leader of an Islamic militant group to his home to prevent him from addressing supporters over the cartoons, amid fears he could incite violence, after riots this week killed five people.”

Even in Pakistan that is illegal. That man should be arrested at once and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. His assets should be frozen immediately.

Here is a directorate of almost all Pakistani missions and embassies. Call what’s local to you and demand this mans arrest.

If you are in America write a letter to your rep. Anyone can also call the World Bank and ask them to consider this before increasing aid to $750 million.

Most importantly, Muslims ask your Imams to condemn this in his next sermon.

I’m on my way now to go pray at my mosque in Cambridge and that is exactly what I am going to do.

UPDATE:

I just got back from my mosque. I was late and missed prayers but I talked to the Imam, told him what I wanted him to do, and that, as a journalist, I would be back next Friday to quote and publish him. He will be delivering the sermon at the MIT interfaith prayer hall.

Please try to do the same in your mosque. We can not let this happen.

4 - This is a bit of a rant, but:
One way that we can insure religious tolerance would be to try and reach an inverse Mendoza line. The Mendoza line is the lowest batting average someone can have and still be able to justify playing Major League Baseball. The inverse Mendoza line would be the maximum amount of craziness that a religious group can reach while still be considered a legitimate organization. I am suggesting that we all draw the line at The Church of God with Signs Following(check them out on Wiki).

The second proposal I would make would be to ignore people who disrespect specific religions. The only reason somebody made piss-christ or will draw Mo in the future is to aggravate that specific religion. If they don't get results then they won't bother doing it again. (Comment this)

Religion throught the ages has been used to controll people and society, is is still working?

I am an athiest, I have never hurt anyone. I have values and know right from wrong. You dont have to have a religion to have morals.

You dont have to ask a higher power (Like god or a prophet) what to do. In the end it is your decision, whether you listened to the voices in your head or not. The voices are you speaking to yourself and you make things happen, make the right decisions in your life.

If you think that women are second class citizens then you are one of the people that need to have a good long discussion with yourself, the only correct outcome of that discussion is that you are equals. (Comment this)

There are destitute people there, not to mention the earthquake survivors in the mountains, but i dont think your plan to talk to Imams will do much. Its ok when you living abroad but in the ME, some of the sermons are digusting & inflammatory, i stopped going to any mosque because ALL preachers spoke politics & hatred, i dont know how the hell people pray with such hatred in their hearts!!! (Comment this)

9 - Atheist
All Religions share some principles, rarely do its followers adhere to it. Some point a group of men start to take over the faith & speak in its name & they start to give orders in the name of God, they also protect their power over the people by simply bashing other faiths, think of it like sport teams, So the problem is with humans not religion. If everyone became atheist, the same thing will happen, it will get corrupted.
What you said about not hurting anyone & morals is nice, but dont forget, you dont belive in a creator like others do. to deny the creator is between you & him but from your point of view, if there is no creator, what is morals & why is there such a thing as wrong & right??
Religion is supposed to help people rise & move forward, unfortunately, most folk cannot break from the chains over their mind, imposed by those who control religion. (Comment this)

10 - Mr. Elsahy,

It is heartening to read this site. Muslims must demand an end to the facist hijacking of their religion. Regardless of ancient grievances, or of the present political motives of Arab governments, Western Muslims must look beyond the excuses in order to reclaim their mosques and their religion.

Stein's Law: whatever cannot go on forever, must end.

Dhimmitude will not last forever; the West will not go quietly once a tipping point is reached, and the islamofacists cannot win the war to follow. Whoever thinks otherwise is profoundly ignorant of the basic character of Western civilization. Better for you to fight them now while you can still save your mosque. (Comment this)

Keep up the good work; people of faith all share far more in common than we have differences.

Radical Islam can only be defeated from within Islam, just as Christians have always quickly joined in to decry our culprits, and we have had our share. The diffence is that we are accustomed to open criticism and debate, and and absolute intolerance for violence and hate, juxtaposed with a built-in tradition of debate.

It appears that Islam is in the early stages of that internal debate, but much needed is a willingness for true moderates to take radicals to task for destroying Islam's credibility with the rest of the world, unfairly. Your efforts are a positive step, indeed. More are needed.

15 - Zeinobia,

The same law applies to -all- religions in most of the West. There is no difference between how satire of the Profet is treated, compared to satire of other religious figures, such as Buddha, Shiva, Jesus, Moses or Abraham.

Same law for all. It has always been thus, and hopefully always will be. If you look into other caricatures brought by the danish newspaper, you will find that there have been -much- worse depictions of Christian and Judaist figures.

I personally found the cartoons to be in poor taste, and I wish they had never been brought. However, to think that muslims are getting are tougher deal caricature-wise or legally, is simply not true.

And no, the cleric shouldn't have said what he did. The embassies shouldn't have been burned, people shouldn't have had to flee homes and jobs, and go into hiding for fear of death. Islam, according to my muslim friends, is supposed to be a religion of peace. Behaviour such as this hurts Islam and the word of your god more than it hurts anyone else. (Comment this)

18 - "Religion is an insult to human dignity. Without it you’d have good people doing good things and evil people doing evils things. But for good people to do evil things it takes religion." - Steven Weinberg.

I'd tend to agree with him. Those that have commented that Atheist was over-simplifying the situation if he/she thinks that us all being atheists would mean there was no longer the corrupt hijacking of groups of people for hidden purposes are right. But I have absolutely no doubt that us all being atheists would remove the number one tool used by the corrupt throughout history to manipulate and abuse human kind.

No offence to any of you out there whatever your personal beliefs. I respect your right to have them. The comments I've read seem to represent questioning minds. But so long as you maintain that there will be one concept you never question, a concept which forms the foundation of your understanding of all existence, then you are still defending decision making without critical thinking as a valid method of defining your actions. That sounds like madness to me.

Honestly, do you really think that if we ever encounter aliens that we are not going to be a bit embarrassed when the faithful start trying to convert them to christianity or islam? Are you not going to think it's a bit silly?

Religion is at the core of thousands of years of human conflict, even if it is just there to hide the agendas and corruptions of those that use it for power. Atheist is right to politely inject atheism into this and many more should do the same. Yes Stalin was brutal, but atheism was not the only goal and was never claimed to be. Spreading a faith almost certainly was not the only goal of much religious conflict, but faith has supported violence much more than atheism ever has or ever will. Why? Because atheism needs reasons supported by evidence. Religion only needs the absence of rational thought. Humans have that in abundance.

Peace to you, whoever you are and whatever you believe. =) (Comment this)

The tricky thing as far as I can see is that if one frees one's mind sufficiently to see the nonsense that gets touted as Islam in must places nowadays, it's difficult not to reject the religion entirely. To me that's the obvious end point, but I'm glad that some intelligent people stay with the religion despite its obvious problems . It's the only hope of influencing the nutcases. (Comment this)

[/quote]

Making fun of Muhammed is not the same as anti-Semitism. Making fun of Moses is the equivalent of making fun of Muhammed.

In Mel Brook's "History of the World - Part 1" Moses stands on a hill, dividing a lake for the heroes to pass through. And it turns out the reason he had his hands up was because he was robbed. After the robbers left, he kvetched (Yiddish complaining) about the robbers.

That was making fun of Moses. And it was funny. And it is completely normal. There are no laws against such a joke in the west. (Comment this)

It will be interesting how your Mosque's Imam condemns this. In my experience, people in his position try to avoid strong affirmative language in an effort to not sound so strong in case some of his audience don't agree! This is exactly what should NOT be the case. We need to speak out and have a crystal clear message of strong disapproval of such poisonous ideas.

Please let us know exactly how he ends up delivering his denunciation. In the mean time I pray for the best :-) (Comment this)

What other contries have laws againt when it comes to blasphemy is up to them.

23 - Why on earth should there be laws specifically preventing people from saying whatever they want to about religion? It's interesting that the more religious people are, the less faith they have in their chosen god. If your god objects to something why doesn't he just hit the offender with a lightning bolt? Maybe god doesn't care? Maybe he's above such childish obsessions? Why is it up to mere mortals to kill someone THEY think offends god? If god can create the universe and everything in it, certainly he can eliminate anyone he wants to. If he doesn't who are the religious to dispute him and take matters into their own hands? Stupid is as stupid does. (Comment this)

24 - Past a certain point, little boys understand that they can really hurt each other and that their fights must become limited, sublimated into symbolic competitions otherwise they will have the blood of their brothers and friends and schoolmates on their hands. There was a very nasty war called the Thirty Years War where the same realization came to the heads of the countries of Europe. They drew up the Peace of Westphalia to form a general settlement and to ensure that the bloody savagery that characterized the Thirty Years War would not happen again.

A key principle of that Peace was that war would only be waged by the State, that freelance warfare would never be tolerated. Actions like the imam's threaten this principle. If the Pakistan government tolerates such actions, things will be much, much worse.

The westphalian system has limited the savagery of war, yes even the bloody slaughter of trench warfare in WW I, massive city firebombing and death camps in WW II, even the atomic bomb attacks were all constrained measures of warfare. The system prevents warfare from degenerating to the point where there is nobody in charge sufficiently enough to make peace. Like every human made system, it is not perfect. It has flaws and fault lines that all sane parties avoid because of the consequences.

Al Queda constantly walks the fault lines of the westphalian system It's how they survive. But they risk us all in overturning the system because when any ordinary imam can call for death, offer money, and raise troops (and some of them do, for Al Queda), with whom shall a peace treaty be signed? If there is no possible peace then the only solution left is the pre-westphalian one, bloody, total warfare.

We are all too powerful for a war that can't have peace. We can destroy the world. If we do not restrain our own madmen within our own communities, we likely will. (Comment this)

In both cases the West will be dragged in a dog-fight with radicals that will blame corruption of Islam to us and not to their own corrupt, racist, malevolent systems. Islam as it is, with its virgins, burquas, dhimmitude and overall superiority complex is destined to the scarphead of history....but not without blood. We will better do like the Latins always did....if you want peace, prepare for war. The only way we have to avoid war is to dismantle the Madrass system across their world and help educate their new generations to tolerance, freedom and democracy. If we do that, we'll get over this within 2 generations. If not, it will be 200 years. (Comment this)

27 - Tarek:

I read your link, unfortunately.

It is your equivocating, nuanced, pseudo-intellectual world view that will precipitate further violence by giving to the facists the media and political cover they need to escalate their war.

You accuse the US of tyrannical policies that in some way excuse 9/11. Maybe by 'tyrannical policies', you are referring to the backing of one set of Arab thugocracies against the Soviet Union's other set of Arab thugocracies? You, of course, remove these alliances from the backdrop of a world-wide struggle between freedom and totalitarianism backed by the threat of nuclear annihilation and mutual assured destruction. You reduce a 50 year titanic struggle between polar world powers down to a 15-minute '60 minutes' segment (with the same dismal CBS News level of objectivity). Of course, you probably reject the whole notion of good vs. evil. It's just a sliding gray scale, and if we would all just talk to each other these misunderstandings wouldn't happen.

You no doubt see a moral equivalence betweeen the West fighting for freedom, and the facists fighting for the right to behead the apostates, stone the gays, kill the cartoonists, and perform clitorectomies on their women. It's all the same: our extremism vs. their extremism.

Our opinions and prognostications don't matter in the end. Just don't expect the average American to give a rat's ass about nuance if (when?) the Islamofacists finally execute a successful WMD attack in the West. If the stark choice is presented, surrender or slaughter, there will be no debate. (Comment this)

No. The vast majority of human conflicts have been over territory and resources (current example - Darfur). Very few have been over religion.

Religion causes fear, you think you are safe because of a fabrication..... it's scary, it's scary where huymanity is at right now, but beautiful too.... think about how young we are as a group of animals, we are just getting started!! Religion will be gone soon, then we can really get going :-)

All one needs is "common sense", logic... using your mind to analyse the world. Sadly not many of us have had the opportunity though, because our parents are caught up so much in the problem, or if you live in a country where the problem is encouraged.

There is no reason to worry though, because the thing about reality is it doesn't lie... truth and logic always win out, as they have been for the last 2000 years, we're getting there slowly :-)

34 - It would have been interesting to have seen how those who purportedly follow the "religion of peace" would have reacted if Orfili had done a portrait of Mohammed in elephant dung or if Serrano would have created a "Piss Mohammed".

All I remember hearing from atheists, seculars and nominal religionists is how its simply part of the territory and that it is the "right" of certain self-appointed people to mock religious icons. And what was the Christian response? Did we threaten to behead infidels or torch the news outlets that printed the offensive material. No, we wrote letters to the editors to express our outrage and then we had the privilege to then be called "censors" for expressing our opinions about this utter disrespect on the part of second-rate "artists" who have anti-Christian axes to grind.

So, I dare say the Arab Street will get a taste of the utter disdain certain self-righteous seculars and atheists have when they ratchet down their rhetoric about murdering those who "disrespect" Mohammed and simply write letters to the editors complaining about such loathesome examples of "art". Muslims and Arabs will find out very quickly that to criticize one of the sainted anti-religious "artists" will bring down their wrath about you being a "censor". The hypocrisy and double-standard of radical secularists is truly breathtaking at times, particularly when one discovers that the most murderous regimes of all history (200 million dead civilians) were not religious in nature but atheistic, ammoral and completely pagan. R.J. Rummel in his "Death by Government" documents this reality. (Comment this)

As I recall, the uproar was really about it being facilitated with taxpayer money. People said the "art" was garbage, they recognized the right of other people to make garbage, and they demanded that garbage not be funded at public expense. I happen to agree with that. It certainly amazes me the way you try to make this world a better place...You want to ban Islam from the world? You call the prophet Muhammed (PBUH)a donkey...Keep in mind you're insulting a man that was appreciated & ranked as the most noble & the greatest man in history, by awesome men like,Goerge Bernard Shaw for example who said about him :
"If a man like Muhamed were to assume the dictatorship of the modern world, he would succeed in solving its problems that would bring it the much needed peace and happiness." Men like Ghandi appreciated his teachings & his biography & learned a lot off of it...
Insulting figures & taboos is not by any mean or form "freedom of speech"! You want to know what the real problem is? You never did any part to try & understand the other side...The other culture you're askin for its "eradication", Their traditions, beliefs, taboos...etc. Both of us has different cultures, backgrounds, prespectives,& standards. We have to accept the fact that we are different...Can we still communicate right regardless of what i just mentioned?
DEFINITELY we can! ONLY...if both of us studied the other's culture well enough to know how to have a conversation without makin fatal communication mistakes out of not knwoing about eachother...If you also mix that with respect for other people beliefs just as much as u would like to have respect paid to urs...We then can call this "a civilised conversation"
that could lead us somewhere...Other than the Nazi Facist "eradication" feelings u have my friend! (Comment this)
