UN of Religions

The Chief Rabbi of Israel, Yona Metzger (above left), has called for the creation of a world body with representatives from the major religious groups.

Very interesting. In a world with a higher reality of ideology and religiosity than most would assume or would probably like to admit, this may very well be just what we need. The UN was spawned from WW2. One lesson we may have learned is that it is not always necessary to wait until after the event to put in place measures to resist a lapse. Is the next one not looming and will not religion will be at its core?

Pre-emptive Peace. Nice.

Rabbi Metzger was addressing the International Congress of Imams and Rabbis for Peace in Seville, Spain.

How did I never hear of this?

Read the whole article here and let me know what you think; to UN or no UN.

1 - The UN is of course a body where 300 million Americans have as many votes as 10 million Arabs.

Perhaps a UR (United Religions) would be a good counter mechanism. There are as many totally different sects and religions in the US as there are countries in the Arab world. And 15 million Jews would be as important as one billion Muslims.

But I see two very real problems. The UR might quickly become as useless and counterproductive as the UN (except without the power to actively prevent members from doing good) and all sorts of sects will want to join.

I absolutely refuse to grant certain sects that are run like corporations the same privileges as Judaism, Christianity, and Islam.

There could also be a problem about schisms in these religions. Will Judaism be represented or will Sephardim and Ashkenazim be regarded as two religions? What about liberal and conservative Jews?

Is Shia and Sunni Islam one religion or two? Or are both a number of religions?

Do we need one or several representatives for Protestantism (Anglican and Lutheran? What about Calvinists?)? There are more Catholics? Will they have fewer representatives? What about all the Orthodox churches? Which one is the representative? There is a patriarch in Istanbul but what about the Assyrians and Eastern Orthodox churches?

This is very complicated.

But it might be a good idea. (Comment this)

2 - If the Priests, Rabbis, sheikhs did their job properly from the begining, we wouldnt be needing this UR.
I am sure alot of criticism, from everyone, will arise from the mere mention of the idea. (Comment this)

3 - I´ve got a feeling the world is getting more polarized and religious every minute, scary indeed. Why would this be a good thing? A UR would probably be even more useless than the UN. We need less of this opium, not more. (Comment this)
